QNAP TS 439 review

Right we just installed a HDD, connected the unit to out gigabyte Ethernet and power up the unit. Since the NAS unit has no default IP assigned yet, you startup a small tool called "QNAP finder".

This application detects the device within seconds and will guide you towards the installation process. I am Dutch and so is my Windows Vista so forgive me the totally Dutch screenshot above. QNAP Finder is a really easy to use piece of software, but let's hit JA (YES) and continue.

So after you got access to the TS-439 you'll be asked if you like to configure it. Probably you might want to hit YES there. There's a 6 step installation processes you'll now follow. Really easy, have a look at the above screenshot.

After time zone, device name, admin password, and setting up IP and Gateway we arrive at step 6 already, for the first run we inserted just one HDD. A small Seagate 80 GB HDD. Should you have multiple disks, you'll be asked how to configure them RAID or single disk configs. We'll show you RAID management later on though. Pretty much we elected Single disk here and Next.

Optionally you can have your HDD contents encrypted with an AES 256 encryption. For a SOHO environment or just sensitive data this might be an viable alternative for you.
